Program mission

The THCA/TNCAL Future Leaders Program seeks to identify, develop and train current and future participants in the association’s governing structure.

Application and selection process

Applicants must be nominated by a current member of the Board of Directors or standing committee no later than Tuesday, November 5th, 2024. Applicants may not nominate themselves. If you do not know any board or committee members, Jesse Samples, THCA/TNCAL’s executive director, will refer someone to you. The nomination letter is part of the application. Completed applications are due to the association no later than Nov. 21, 2024.

Nominees may be:

• A licensed nursing home or assisted living administrator employed by a member facility

OR

• A corporate leader/official of a company that owns or manages member facilities.

The applicant is required to have the support/permission of their employer to participate in the program.

The selection committee will be comprised of THCA board and standing committee members.  A member of the selection committee could participate in the THCA Future Leaders Program but must recuse themselves from discussion on their application.

There will be no charge for the training, but participants will be responsible for their travel expenses.

Meeting schedule

• Four ½ day (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) in-person meetings at the THCA/TNCAL office in Brentwood:

Jan. 28, 2025 (Legislative Process; Hill Visits)
May 14, 2025
Sept. 17, 2025
January 2026

• Three one-hour virtual meetings via webinar:

Feb. 5, 2025
Aug. 6, 2025
Nov. 12, 2025

Program participants are expected to attend all meetings and well as the 2025 Legislative Conference & 2025 Annual Convention. If more than one meeting is missed, the participant will be disenrolled from the program and given an opportunity to apply for the following year’s cycle.

In addition to the slate of meetings, participants will be expected to complete one community project during their year in the program and have at least one visit from an elected official in their district. These two activities can be combined. Some examples:

• Holding a reception for a local political candidate or elected official at the facility
• Participating in a community project on behalf of the facility such as a public speaking opportunity
• Volunteering or using the facility as a host to a community activity
• Undertaking a project that supports a THCA/TNCAL goal on the local level

Following completion of the program, graduates will be recognized at the 2026 THCA Legislative Conference in March of 2026.

All graduates of the program are committed to serving at least one year on a THCA/TNCAL committee. Graduates are not assured of a leadership role in THCA’s or TNCAL’s governing structure. Conversely, members who do not participate in the Future Leaders Program are not excluded from holding a leadership role. It is anticipated, however, that this program will serve as training for future leaders.
